About the Opportunity
An established leader in outdoor consumer products is seeking a Senior Packaging Engineer to lead innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective packaging design initiatives. This role plays a critical part in enhancing product integrity, sustainability, and customer experience across global operations. The ideal candidate is a creative problem-solver with hands-on experience designing and validating packaging for high-volume consumer or industrial products.
Key Responsibilities
Design packaging solutions that ensure product protection and cost efficiency across small parcel, last mile, and LTL freight environments.
Lead testing and validation (shock, vibration, compression) in partnership with internal product integrity and external test labs.
Develop compliant packaging for lithium battery products (UN 38.3) ensuring safe transport across all shipping modes.
Partner with cross-functional teams (Brand, Product, Operations, Supply Chain) to align packaging with brand storytelling and sustainability goals.
Drive continuous improvement through Value Analysis/Value Engineering and Lean principles.
Support supplier development, audits, and performance evaluations for packaging materials and design compliance.
Lead initiatives in sustainable materials, closed-loop systems, and recyclable/biodegradable alternatives.
Utilize data analytics to track packaging performance, identify opportunities, and deliver measurable improvements.
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to building internal packaging expertise and standards.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering or related field.
Minimum of 5 years of packaging design experience in a high-volume consumer or industrial manufacturing environment.
Strong understanding of ASTM/ISTA testing standards, packaging validation, and regulatory requirements.
Experience with corrugated, pulp, and foam materials; knowledge of printed retail packaging and clamshells a plus.
Familiarity with UN 38.3 testing for lithium battery packaging compliance.
Proficiency in CAD design software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Demonstrated leadership in cross-functional project management and supplier collaboration.
Passion for innovation, sustainability, and continuous improvement.
Ability to travel up to 20% domestically and internationally.
